-- With documented campaign results including a 235 percent improvement in ad performance for Oxfam Canada, Dani Vachon sets out why the most consistent cause of underperforming nonprofit social media is a mismatch between what the organization wants to say and what the audience needs to understand.
Dani Vachon, founder and CEO of The Beacon Design Collective Inc., an award-winning, carbon-negative creative studio based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has set out her perspective on why nonprofit social media campaigns often underperform relative to the effort and investment that goes into them.
Vachon's position is grounded in Beacon's direct campaign work with nonprofits and social justice organizations, including its documented collaboration with Oxfam Canada on the Stuff She Makes campaign, which produced a 235 percent improvement in ad performance within 30 days alongside increases in signed petitions and donations.
The Organization-First Problem
In Vachon's assessment, the most consistent cause of underperforming nonprofit social media is not insufficient budget, inadequate reach, or weak creative execution. It is a fundamental mismatch between what the organization wants to communicate and what the specific audience it is trying to reach needs to understand in order to act.
Most nonprofit social media content, in her experience, is built around what the organization wants to say: its mission, its impact, its values, its programmes. This content is accurate and well-intentioned, and it often resonates deeply with people who are already engaged with the organization. But it is designed from the inside out, starting with what the organization wants to express rather than with what a specific external audience needs to encounter in order to move from passive awareness to active engagement.
"The question that changes everything is not what do we want to say," Vachon says. "It is who specifically are we trying to reach, what do they already believe, and what would need to be different for them to take the action we are asking for. Those questions produce completely different content."
What the Oxfam Canada Work Illustrated
The Stuff She Makes campaign for Oxfam Canada illustrates the practical difference this audience-first approach makes. Rather than leading with Oxfam's mission or the scale of the garment industry's labour issues, Beacon's strategy identified fashion lovers as the specific audience the campaign needed to reach, and built every creative decision around what would resonate with and move that specific group.
The resulting campaign used bright colors, well-dressed models, and direct copy designed to speak to fashion lovers in their own visual language. The 235 percent improvement in ad performance within 30 days was not a function of higher spend or wider reach. It was a function of more precise audience understanding applied before a single creative decision was made.
"The mission did not change," Vachon says. "What changed was how clearly we understood who we were talking to and what they needed to see."
