NEW YORK (AP) — Tampa Bay right-hander Drew Rasmussen has not allowed a hit through six innings against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night as the Rays attempt to clinch the AL East title.
Rasmussen has 10 strikeouts and has thrown 93 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Matt Garza is the only Tampa Bay pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Garza no-hit Detroit on July 26, 2010, at Tropicana Field.
Rasmussen ended the sixth inning by getting New York's Cody Bellinger on a flyball to right field.
Rasmussen walked Austin Wells with one out in the third and ended the inning by striking out Ben Rice on a high fastball. The 31-year-old issued a leadoff walk to Cody Bellinger and ended the fourth by striking out rookie Spencer Jones with a fastball.
Rasmussen got consecutive strikeouts on rookie George Lombard Jr. and Austin Wells to finish the fifth at 78 pitches.
The Rays can claim their fifth AL East title with a victory and took a 1-0 lead on Ryan Vilade’s groundout in the third against Max Fried.
The Yankees have been no-hit eight times. The last was a combined no-hitter by Houston’s Cristian Javier, Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly on June 25, 2022, at Yankee Stadium.
