Anthony Volpe has rejoined the New York Yankees after Jazz Chisholm Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb
NEW YORK (AP) — Anthony Volpe rejoined the New York Yankees on Thursday when second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained right thumb.
Volpe, who lost his shortstop job in New York to rookie George Lombard Jr., was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before Thursday night's series finale against Colorado. Chisholm was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to Wednesday.
A Gold Glove shortstop as a rookie with the Yankees in 2023, Volpe played 19 games at second base for the RailRiders and hit .524 with three homers and six RBIs in his last six games. After he was optioned on Aug. 4, Volpe was hitting .295 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 27 games while playing shortstop and third base.
Volpe's season debut with the Yankees was delayed until May 13 after he recovered from surgery last October to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He entered Thursday batting .240 with one homer and 19 RBIs in 56 games with New York.
Chisholm has spent time on the IL in each season since being acquired from Miami in July 2024. He missed a little more than a month last season with a strained right oblique and missed nearly two weeks with a sprained left elbow sustained on a headfirst slide in 2024.
